Tips for Throwing the Perfect Kentucky Derby Themed Bridal Shower

The Kentucky Derby is this weekend and that's the perfect reason to blog this derby themed bridal shower styled shoot that we were lucky enough to be a part of last year - don't you think? We put together some tips and tricks for throwing the perfect bridal shower for that special bride to be.

1. Dress the part!

First things first - it's always more fun when everyone dresses for the occasion. It wouldn't be a Kentucky Derby party without the bold colors and fascinators. Encourage your guests to show up in their most festive attire - we're talking floral dresses, big hats and fancy jewelry.

2. Set the table and the tone.

Bright colors and mismatched china were used in this playful and fun tablescape. The floral centerpiece was created in a vintage trophy and if you ask me, it was the highlight of the whole table. Bold napkins and floral plates helped bring this whole look together. This color palate was perfect for a bridesmaids brunch. We love the colors.

A special seat for the bride is always necessary! Our pretty upholstered "Piper" chair was perfect alongside the mismatched wooden chairs at the table.

Each place setting had a mini cake too - because, why not?

3. You must serve the appropriate derby drinks!

Apparently, it wasn't a Kentucky Derby party if you didn't serve mint juleps. I have never personally enjoyed one BUT mint juleps are the official drink of the Kentucky Derby. There is a recipe below and it sounds refreshing! Bourbon, crushed ice, sugar, water and fresh mint!

For those not drinking the signature derby drink - fun bottled sodas or pretty rose lemonades fit the theme well. Cheers!

4. Add some DIY themed details!

Anything with horses, goes. That's what we heard anyway! Rachel from Handmade Darling made these sweet little drink stirrers with some gold spray paint and a little creativity and they were PERFECT for the party.

Vintage trophies and mint julep cups were used as floral vessels and green topiaries were scattered around the room as place holders and signage holders.

5. Create a cozy lounge for guests and gifts.

We created a colorful and cozy spot for all of the ladies to shower the bride with gifts and it doubled as a pretty photo opp location too.

6. Don't forget the sweets and treats.

We saved the sweetest for last. It's not a party without dessert. These rose and succulent cupcakes were almost too pretty to eat and fit right in with the theme.
